Corzine and the nuclear power debate

Governor John Corzine is now looking into building the first nuclear power plant in New Jersey in more than 35 years. While it is understandable that New Jersey is growing and consuming more power with each passing day, there has to be some other form. Instead of looking into renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar, Corzine wants to bring potentially-dangerous plants to our area.

In an article on RedOrbit, Corzine’s Energy Master Plan is discussed. According to the story, nuclear energy now account for 25% of the state’s carbon emissions with its four reactors, and in order to meet Corzine’s 20% decrease in carbon emissions by 2020, the state has to find more eco-friendly energy choices. The problem is that New Jersey does not have to find a way to meet our current energy use, but energy use 12 years in the future. And, who knows how great that will be?
Currently, nuclear power is responsible for half the power generated in New Jersey. In order for us to meet and exceed these demands, solar and wind energy, such as that in Atlantic City, need to become a state priority.
Where do you see the future of New Jersey’s energy?
